I was carved out from the very devil himself, and although I would never be good enough for Anastasia, that didn’t mean I’d ever let anyone else have her. And so I followed her, watched her through her bedroom window, broke into her apartment, and held her as she slept. But they could never take her away from me. Now, ten years later, all of humanity had been stripped from me, all the emotion and empathy that I’d once felt taken away until I was nothing more than the beast who craved blood and had far too many kills tallied up. But I was ripped away from her, thrust into the underground world of violence and fighting, molded and shaped to be the ultimate killing machine for the Bratva. She was the only one who could look at my bruises and wounds and see I wasn’t a total waste of space. She was the only good and right thing in my painful, brutal life. But that didn’t stop a bond, a friendship to form between us.

Her ongoing blahblahblah about not being able to write a play gets in the way of everything I love about the book. As a reader I was at once stunned by the great writing, then put off by some of the content. Then again, that is part of the beauty and part of the complication with this book. Sure it tastes good, but there really isn’t much sustenance.Įvery page has a great quote, it's just I don't believe in every one of them. I was firmly in the teeth, but with Heti, I am often picked out like stray corn off the cob, only to be looked at and reconsidered, popped back in the mouth and stuck again, only for the cycle to repeat itself. I mean, come on, did anybody really give a shit that he called it a novel when it was a distorted memoir? Why does Sheila get away with it? At least Frey’s book was solid writing throughout. Why does a book have to be labelled? Is it for the bookseller, being in such a state that all the part timers can’t be bothered to know their merchandise well enough to properly sort it? Is it that the fault of people like Oprah and James Frey, for pulling off the wool over the reader’s eyes. I would be just as happy, more so even, if the publishers just dropped the label altogether. Either have the balls to go all out memoir or just write a novel. I have a hard time caring about a memoir being labelled a novel. It says "novel" on the cover but is described as a memoir. Thirdly, as someone who follows Jesus and came to that conclusion on my own over a period of many years of intense study, I sincerely appreciate her not forcing the bible down people’s throat like so many televangelists and some Christian radio show hosts do. Secondly, I felt that this book was very genuine and full of personal convictions which she had every right to share. I completely respect her decision as well. It was a very personal one and it is evident she had to sacrifice a lot to become a devout follower of Jesus as well as endure a tremendous amount of criticism. First off, I have no right to judge her decision. Since this book is a short read and free through my kindle unlimited app, I couldn’t help but read it.
